Background

FAW required an integrated, smart production and sales system.

China FAW Group Corporation (short for FAW), formerly China First Automobile Works, was founded in 1953. FAW is one of China's oldest and largest automotive manufacturers, with many well-known brands, including Hongqi and Jiefang.

The FAW Hongqi ERP rearchitecting project aims to customize luxury car models in phase 1, driving innovation in the entire group and seeking business breakthroughs. FAW needs to enable fine-grained management on their ERP and build an integrated, smart production and sales system to meet increasing car customization requirements.

Challenges

Massive database access requests

Automobiles are highly customized, resulting in surging data volume and posing a challenge for databases.

Strict reliability requirements

The ERP service system is the core production service system of an automobile enterprise. Data loss is not acceptable. The system must be able to recover from faults within seconds, achieving high reliability and availability.

Compatibility requirements

A distributed database fully compatible with MySQL was required.

Solutions

By using GaussDB(for MySQL), FAW Hongqi ERP is able to flexibly scale the capacity to manage traffic spikes while reducing the cost of databases.

  • Quick response

Based on a decoupled storage and compute architecture, Huawei Cloud GaussDB(for MySQL) provides operator pushdown and parallel query capabilities, achieving millions of QPS. The GaussDB(for MySQL) performance is stable even during peak hours. The ERP can be deployed across AZs and recover from fault within seconds, achieving high reliability and availability.

  • Zero changes to applications

The original ERP used a mainstream commercial database, which was not open to unify services. Huawei Cloud GaussDB(for MySQL) is fully compatible with open-source MySQL databases. It does not require database/table sharding, or application rearchitecting, greatly reducing reconstruction costs. Users can enjoy an open ecosystem and flexible services. GaussDB(for MySQL) runs seven times quicker than open-source databases, greatly improving the O&M efficiency and performance.

  • Seamless migration

Huawei Cloud Data Replication Service (DRS) helped FAW connect data between old ERP, new ERP, and microservices by online data migration. DRS can also compare data to help FAW check data consistency between the source and destination databases during the migration.
