Customer Introduction
Founded in 2002, the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), is the wholly state-owned investment, construction and operations of electrical grids. It was No. 2 on the Fortune Global 500 in 2021. The public utility serves over 1.1 billion people in 26 provinces, autonomous regions, direct-administered municipalities, covering 88% of the country.
Over 20 years, SGCC has set the world's longest safety record for super-large power grids as the world's largest utility, with the strongest transmission and new energy integration. It has multiple achievements in ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission and a decade in outnumbering other SOEs in patents. With investments in the backbone energy networks in 9 countries and regions, SGCC has been graded an A-class SOE for 17 years.
Beijing China Power Information Technology, founded in 2004 with a registered capital of CNY840 million, is an ICT specialist affiliated to SGCC's subsidiary State Grid Information.
Inefficient O&M: Underpowered edge computing could not handle connection peaks
The State Grid serves 430 million users with tens of thousands of substations, millions of distribution stations, and hundreds of thousands of converter stations. Its challenges:
-
Many disconnected devices were not managed consistently.
-
Weak edge processing, device connection, and model compatibility affected data interaction.
-
O&M was mainly manual and lacked quality assurance.
A smart IoT system has been built on ROMA's powerful integration and governance capabilities to access hundreds of millions of devices, serving 24 provinces with comprehensive electric power services
•ROMA Connect gives data models IT & OT convergence capabilities, while ROMA Site is deployed at the edge to standardize device access.
•To converge device and data, a unified service framework integrates the perception layer with data processing/sharing and applications. IoT silos are replaced by a management platform and technical routes over the entire process: power transmission, transformation, distribution, consumption, and dispatch.
•The SGCC Shaanxi branch introduced ROMA MessageFlow for their hardware engineers to develop IoT applications.

We have faith in Huawei Cloud, and that's why we chose ROMA for our IoT management platform. Now with standardized access for all sorts of devices, consistent models, and platform development, traditional silos are a thing of the past. For example, our Shaanxi branch adopted ROMA to maintain 90% more devices per capita, with 90% less onsite O&M.
